A Sacrifice With No Presence

Description

The altar was burning. The sacrifices were being offered. The priests were doing their jobs.

But the Presence of God was somewhere else.

In 2 Chronicles 1, Solomon stood at Gibeon before the historic Tabernacle of Moses.

The structure was there.

The bronze altar was there.

The priesthood was functioning.

The worshipers had gathered.

And Solomon offered an astonishing one thousand burnt offerings before the Lord.

Everything looked right.

There was only one problem.

The Ark of the Covenant wasn’t there.

The mercy seat, the place where God had promised to meet with His people, was miles away in Jerusalem.

The entire religious system was functioning…

without its center.

And that raises a haunting question for the modern Church:

Could we be doing the same thing?

Could the lights still come on?

Could the worship team still sing?

Could the sermon still be preached?

Could the offering still be received?

Could the calendar remain full, the programs remain active, and the machinery of ministry continue operating…

while the Presence of God has quietly moved out of the center?

And perhaps the more personal question is even harder:

Could the same thing happen inside us?

Could we continue reading our Bibles, attending church, serving, giving, praying, and practicing all the familiar disciplines of Christianity while slowly becoming accustomed to something God never intended us to accept:

religious activity without living encounter?
